first, we draw the triangle

To solve this we are to apply the Pythagorean theorem, which states


(\text{HYP)}^2\text{ = (OP}\P)^2+(ADJ)^2

From the triangle;

hyp = 37 in, opp = 12 in, Adj = x in

hence,


\begin{gathered} 37^2=12^2+x^2 \\ 1369=144+x^2 \\ 1369-144=x^2 \\ 1225=x^2 \\ \text{take square root of both sides} \\ x\text{ = }\sqrt[]{1225} \\ x\text{ = 35 in} \end{gathered}

Therefore,

The horizontal distance = 35 in
