A student is to pick one card from a standard deck, roll one standard die, and flip a coin. How many different possible outcomes are there?

1) We can start out by listing all the possible outcomes for each of these objects:

a) Standard Deck: 52 cards (4 x 13 cards spades, hearts, clubs, and diamonds)

b) One standard die: 6 sides (1,2,3,4,5,6)

c) A (fair) coin: 2 sides (heads or tails)

2) In accordance with the Fundamental Counting Principle, we can multiply these outcomes:


2*6*52=624

Note that these are the possible outcomes, there was not a particular event to be found.
