Let L be an arbitrary number. The phrase "the quiotient of a number and 2" may be represented as:

(L)/(2)

And that quantity decreased by 4 is:

(L)/(2)-4

If that is equal to 12, then we can write down the equation:

(L)/(2)-4=12

Add 4 to both sides of the equation:

\begin{gathered} (L)/(2)=12+4 \\ =16 \end{gathered}

Multilpy both sides by 2:

\begin{gathered} L=16\cdot2 \\ =32 \end{gathered}

Therefore, the number is 32.
