1) Given the mixed number 5 3/5 and 8 4/5 let's add them

2) Let's turn them into improper fractions, keeping the denominators and multiplying the denominator by the whole number, and add to the numerator, to get the new numerator:

\begin{gathered} 5(3)/(5)=((5*5+3))/(5)=(28)/(5) \\ 8(4)/(5)=(5*8+4)/(5)=(44)/(5) \\ (28)/(5)+(44)/(5)=(72)/(5) \end{gathered}

3) So the answer is 72/5 (improper fraction) or 14 4/10 (mixed number)
