The skin can be diveded into three layers, being the largest organ. The layers are: epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer), and hypodermis (inner layer) being the layers important to the functions of the skin.
The layer that's responsible for most of the work of this organ is the dermis, sitting just below the epidermis this layer makes up about 90% of the skin's thickness and serves many functions, for example:
- Grows hair: the roots of hair follicles attach to the dermis;
- Makes oil: the dermis help keep the skin soft by the production of oil by the oil glands;
- The nerves are in the dermis: the middle layer tell you when exists temperature changes, itch, and other sensory reactions because of the nerves receptors;
- Produces sweat: in the dermis we see the sweat glads, that are important for the temperature regulation;
- Supplies blood: the blood vessels in the dermis provide nutrients to the
- Has collagen and elastin: proteins that are responsible to make the cells more resilient, and keep the skin flexible.
