Remember that

The average rate of change is given by the formula

(f(b)-f(a))/(b-a)

In this problem we have

b=5

a=1

f(a)=f(1)=(1)^2-4(1)+1=-2

f(b)=f(5)=(5)^2-4(5)+1=6

substitute given values in the formula

(6-(-2))/(5-1)=(8)/(4)=2

The answer is 2
