Steel rods shrink 10% when cooled from furnace temperature to room temperature. If a tie rod is 80 in long at furnace temperature, how long is the cooled tie rod?

Given that the initial length of the rod is 80 inches.

And it shrinks 10% when cooled from the furnace.

Let the new length be x inches.

Then the length of the shrinked rod will be


\begin{gathered} x=[80-10\%\text{ of 80\rbrack inches} \\ x=[80-(10)/(100)*80\text{ \rbrack inches} \\ x=[80-8]\text{ inches} \\ x=72\text{ inches} \end{gathered}

Hence, the length of the shrinked rod will be 72 inches.
