The total cost to the nearest cent simply means to the nearest hundreths. Therefore, the cost of the shirt is $ 24 and a 6% tax .

The tax is 6 % of cost of the shirt

\begin{gathered} \text{tax price = }(6)/(100)\text{ }*\text{ 24} \\ \text{tax price = }(144)/(100) \\ \text{tax price = \$ }1.44 \end{gathered}
\begin{gathered} t\text{otal cost = 24 + 1.44} \\ \text{total cost = \$}25.44 \end{gathered}
