how to add 11/12 + -3 / 8

we have

(11)/(12)+(-(3)/(8))=(11)/(12)-(3)/(8)

Find the lcm of denominators

12=(2)(2)(3)

8=(2)(2)(2)

so

lcm=(2)(2)(2)(3)=24

Determine an equivalent fractions with the same denominator

Multiply the fraction 11/12 by (2/2)

(11/12)(2/2)=22/24

Multiply the fraction 3/8 by (3/3)

(3/8)(3/3)=9/24

substitute

(11)/(12)-(3)/(8)=(22)/(24)-(9)/(24)=(22-9)/(24)=(13)/(24)

the answer is 13/24
