Let x represent the weight of Jessica’s dog

Let y represent the weight of Emma’s dog

The dogs weigh 38 pounds altogether.It means that

x + y = 38

Emma’s dog weighs 10 pounds more than Jessica’s dog. It means that

y = x + 10

Substituting y = x + 10 into the first equation, then

x + x + 10 = 38

2x + 10 = 38

The equation that can be used to find the weight of Jessica’s dog is

2x + 10 = 38
