The next stepto prove that the base angles are congruent is to use the

Angle-Angle-Side theorem

Note that both triangles have a 90 degree angle. Also the original triangle ABC is isosceles which means angles A and C are equal in measure. if the line BD divides AC into 2 equal halves (divides at the midpoint) then it means angle B in triangle ABD is equal to angle B in triangle CBD.

Therefore, if side BD is equal in length in both triangles, then the triangles are congruent and angle B in triangle ABD equals angle B in triangle CBD.
