A windowpane is 7 inches tall and the diagonal distance from one corner to the other is 9 inches. How wide is the windowpane? If necessary, round to the nearest tenth.

to solve this question, we can draw a little illustration to depicts and give us a clear view of how the sides fit

now we use pythagoran theorem.

according to pythagoran theorem we can say the sum of the square of the legs is equals to the square of the hypothenus


\begin{gathered} 9^2=x^2+7^2 \\ 81=x^2+49 \\ \text{collect like terms} \\ x^2=81-49 \\ x^2=32 \\ \text{take the square root of both sides} \\ \sqrt[]{x^2}=\sqrt[]{32} \\ x=5.66\approx5.7inches \end{gathered}

from the calculations above, the width of the windowpane is 5.7 inches
