1. Plant ECM is primarily carbohydrate in nature, whereas animal ECM is mainly proteins.

2. The main component of the animal extracellular matrix is the protein collagen. Plants do not produce collagen, so the main organic molecule in the plant cell wall is cellulose, a polysaccharide made up of glucose units.

Similarities:

1. Both the cell wall and the extracellular matrix provide structural support.

2. Both the cell wall and the animal extracellular matrix are secreted by cells. Indeed, The cell wall is derived from vesicles produced in the Golgi apparatus present in the cytoplasm of plant cells.
