y=mx+b

to solve for b, we need to substract mx on both sides so that b stays on one side of the equal sides with nothing else

\begin{gathered} y=mx+b \\ y-mx=mx+b-mx \\ y-mx=b\Rightarrow b=y-mx \end{gathered}
