Distance between two points

We are going to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find their distance. It says that in a right triangle:

S₁² + S₂² = h²

Using the given points we are going to construct a triangle

If we find side 1 and side 2 of the triangle we will find their distance (the hypotenuse is the distance in this case):

Side 1: change of x

The distance, horizontally, between the two points is

|0 - (-3) | = |0 + 3| = 3

(first numbers of ordered pairs)

Side 2: change of y

The vertical distance between is

|3 - 2| = 1

(second numbers of ordered pairs)

Then the hypotenuse is given by

S₁² + S₂² = h²

3² + 1² = h²

9 + 1 = h²

10 = h²

√10 = h

Answer: the distance between the points (-3, 2) and (0, 3) is √10
