We will start with the right triangle which has a leg x and the other leg is 4 x 2 = 8, and the hypotenuse of length 17

(17)^2=x^2+(8)^2

Then

289=x^2+64

Subtract 64 from both sides to find x^2

\begin{gathered} 289-64=x^2+64-64 \\ 225=x^2 \end{gathered}

Take square root for both sides

\begin{gathered} \sqrt[]{225}=\sqrt[]{x^2} \\ 15=x \end{gathered}

x = 15

To find y we will use the right triangle which has leg 4 and leg 15 and hypotenuse y

Take care opposite side to x must be equal to x

\begin{gathered} y^2=(4)^2+(15)^2 \\ y^2=16+225 \\ y^2=241 \end{gathered}

Take square root for both sides

\begin{gathered} \sqrt[]{y^2}=\sqrt[]{241} \\ y=\sqrt[]{241} \end{gathered}
