A dilation is a transformation that scales a pre-image point or figure into an image.

The general transformation rule is:

(x,y)\longrightarrow(kx,ky)

where k is the factor of dilation.

For a pure dilation transformation, the factor k will take only positives values.

When k is between 0 and 1, the image will be smaller than the pre-image.

When k is greater than 1, the image will be greater than the pre-image.

If k=1, there is no dilation, as the image will be equal to the pre-image.

Answer:

If the image is smaller than the pre-image, the scale factor is between 0 and 1.
