There are different fossil preservation mechanisms, one of the most popular is permineralization. In this process, mineral salts are deposited on the individual resulting in a solid fossil. However, the type of preservation that involves inclusion in resin is called a preserved fossil because it gives us a more reliable impression of what the organism looked like. Unlike permineralization, here the components of the organism are preserved and not replaced by minerals.
