Since the mathematic textbook weighs 3 3/4 Ib

Since the science textbook weighs 55 oz

We must change 55 oz to Ib

Since 1 oz = 0.0625 Ib, then

55 oz = 55 x 0.0625 = 3 7/16 Ib

Now we will add all to find the total weight

5+3(3)/(4)+3(7)/(16)

Let us add the wholes, then add the fractions

5+3+3=11
\begin{gathered} (3)/(4)+(7)/(16)=(3*4)/(4*4)+(7)/(16)= \\ (12)/(16)+(7)/(16)=(19)/(16) \\ 1(3)/(16) \end{gathered}

Let us add the two answers

11+1(3)/(16)=12(3)/(16)

The total weight is 12 3/16 pounds
