Since M is the midpoint of CE, then

CM = ME

Since CM = 17, then

ME = 17

Since MD = ME + ED

Since MD = 68

Substitute MD and ME by their values, then

68 = 17 + ED

Subtract 17 from both sides to find ED

68 - 17 = 17 - 17 + ED

51 = ED

a) The length of ED is 51

E can be a mid-point of CD if CE = ED

Let us check that

CE = CM + ME

CE = 17 + 17 = 34

ED = 51

Since CE, not equal ED

Then E is not the mid-point of CD

b) E is not the mid-point of CD
