A population is where we get our sample. Therefore, all apples on the fruit farm are our population for this study.
Out of all the apples on the fruit farm, the inspector looked at 75 apples. Therefore, 75 apples are our sample.
A variable is an information we want to gather from the sample. Since the inspector wanted to know whether an apple meets the health standards or not, then this is our variable.
A statistic is the result of the study based on the sample.
A parameter is a result based on the entire population.
After inspecting 75 apples, the result is that 20% of the apples did not meet the health standards. Since 20% is the result based on the sample, then 20% is a statistic.
On the other hand, the general report made by the owners of the fruit farm which is 12% of their apples do not meet health standards, 12% is a parameter.
So, this leaves us with "one apple" as a case.
