This expression has an unkwnon number, to make the equation you have to call that number with a letter, for example x

"A fourth of a number is subtracted from trice the number"

>Fourth of a number means that it was divided by four, wich is equivalent to multiplying it by 1/4, so you can symbolize this part as:


(1)/(4)x

> Trice the number means that this unknown number is multiplied by 3, you can symbolize this par as


3x

> Finally, the sentence says that 1/4x is being subtracted from 3x, this implies that the symbol separating both terms is a minus sign ans that 3x is the first terms of the equation and 1/4x is the second. Symbolically:


3x-(1)/(4)x
