When we need to add number with different signs we subtract the numbers, like this:

9-4=5

And the sign of the result is the sing of the greater number. In this case, 9 is greater than 4 and 9 is negative, therefore, the result is negative, therefore:


-9+4=-5

To do this in the number line we locate the first number. In this case, -9. Therefore, we start with -9.

Now, we use a step for each line in the number line. Therefore, we get:

Now, since we will add 4 to -9, this means that we start at -9 and move 4 places to the right. Like this:

Since we landed at -5 this means that -9 + 4 = -5.
