A function has to have only one y value for each x value. This means the we can pass a vertical line in any place of its graph and it should intersect the graph only once. If it intersept the graph more than once, then the graph is not a function.

In this case, we can take, for example, the vertical line x = 0, which intersepts the graph twice:
