Tom and Gary are leaving the same town for a meeting in different cities. However, they have not quite finished discussing a business plan. Tom must leave 1 1/2 hours earlier than Gary to make his meeting. Tom heads east on a train at 45 miles per hour. Gary heads west on a train at 65 miles per hour. How long can they talk on their phones if the phones have a range of 282 miles?

we make a draw

then if we sum the speeds and multiply by the number of the hours where these trip 282 miles

\begin{gathered} 45h+65h=282 \\ (45+65)h=282 \\ 110h=282 \\ \end{gathered}

AND SOLVE FOR h

h=(282)/(110)\approx2.56

they can talk on phones 2.56 hours
