Ratio simply means the number of times one value is containeds in another value.

For example, a bowl contain 2 bananas and 3 oranges

The ratio of banana to orange is 2: 3 and the ratio of orange to banana is 3:2

To evaluate any ratio

Add up the ratio numbers to becaome a whole number

That is 2+3 = 5

Take each ratio to be its own numerator and the total ratio to be the denominator

That is; 2:3 implies 2/5 and 3/5

For example;

A bag contains 20 oranges and banana. The ratio of oranges to banana is 2:3. Find the number of oranges and banana.

To find the number of oranges

2:3 = 2+3 = 5

number of oranges = 2/5 x total number of oranges and banana

= 2/5 x 20

=40/5

=8

number of banana = 3/5 x total number of oranges and bananas

= 3/5 x 20

=60/5

=12
