We are told that Jay pays $6 per pound, if he buys 23 pound then the total amount paid is the product of the price per pound by the number of pounds:

P=(6\text{ dollars/pound)(23 pounds)}

Solving we get:

P=138\text{ dollars}

Therefore, he pays $138
