Eight times means the product of eight by something, the something would be the diference between twice a number (x) and one, therefore the first part is:

8\cdot(2x\text{ - 1)}

The second part says that the first part is decreased by 4 times a number (x) and that all of it is equal to 48, therefore:

8\cdot(2x\text{ -1) - 4}\cdot x\text{ = 48}

We can now solve for "x".

\begin{gathered} 16x\text{ -8 -4x = 48} \\ 12x\text{ = 48 + 8} \\ 12x\text{ = 56} \\ x\text{ = }(56)/(12)\text{ = }(14)/(3) \end{gathered}

The number is 14/3 or 4.67
