Phospholipids are organic molecules derived from fatty acids. It is composed of a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. It is an important structure of the cell membrane. Because of the nature of phospholipids, the cell membrane can selectively allow substances to pass through into the cell. Another role of a phospholipid in the cell is a secondary messenger. It helps relay signals from an extracellular stimuli.
