Given:

Original Drive

Rate of x mph

Time of 3 hours.

Return Drive

Rate of x + 23 mph (from the phrase ...increase his average by 23mph...)

Time of 2 hours

Given formula of Rate × Time = Distance

\begin{gathered} \text{Rate}*\text{Time}=\text{Distance} \\ \text{First equation} \\ x\cdot3=\text{Distance} \\ 3x=\text{Distance} \\ \\ \text{Second equation} \\ (x+23)\cdot2=\text{Distance} \\ 2x+46=\text{Distance} \end{gathered}
