We can find the cost of the couch and coffee table as follow

Let the cost of the couch be C

Let the cost of the coffee table be T

First, we are told that they both cost $1290

Therefore, our first equation will be

C+T=1290---equation1

Next, we are told the cost of the couch is twice that of the coffee table

so

C=2T---\text{equation 2}

Solving equations 1 and 2 simultaneously

\begin{gathered} \text{substitute C=2T into equation 1} \\ 2T+T=1290 \\ 3T=1290 \\ T=(1290)/(3) \\ T=410 \\ \text{The cost of the coffe}e\text{ table is \$ 430} \end{gathered}

Next, we will find the cost of the couch

\begin{gathered} C=2T \\ C=2*430 \\ C=860 \\ The\text{ cost of the coffe}e\text{ table is \$860} \end{gathered}

The cost of the couch is $860

The cost of the coffee table is $430
