Suppose you work for a large coffee distributor that has a secret coffee blend it sells to local stores. You mix the Terraza blend with the Kona blend, but always in the same proportion. Yesterday, you mixed 110 pounds of the Terraza blend with 88 pounds of the Kona blend. Today, there is 80 pounds of the Terraza coffee left in stock. How many pounds of the Kona coffee should you mix with it to get your secret blend?

The secret blend was prepared yesterday with 110 of Terraza blend and 88 pounds of Kona blend.

If today the blend is prepared with the 80 pounds of Terraza blend, we can calculate how many pounds of Kowa blend are needed to mantain the proportion of the secret blend.

Then, we can apply the rule of three:

\begin{gathered} 110\text{ pounds of Terraza }\to88\text{ pounds of Kowa} \\ 80\text{ pounds of Terraza}\to x=(88)/(110)*80=64\text{ pounds of Kowa} \end{gathered}

We can check that the proportion for the secret blend is 0.8 pounds of Kowa per pound of Terraza:

(88)/(110)=(64)/(80)

Answer: we should mix 64 pounds of Kowa.
