In order to estimate the population of bass in a pond, the number of bass is countedin a 1,000 cubic meter sample of the pond.At a pond with dimensions of 80 meters X 50 meters X 10 meters, 11 bass arecounted in a 1,000 cubic meter sample. What is the estimated bass population inthis pond?

From the statement, we know that:

• 11 bass are counted per 1,000 cubic meter sample, we have the ratio r = 11 bass/1,000 m³,

,

• we have a pond with dimensions a = 80 m, b = 50 m and c = 10 m.

1) The volume of the pond is:

V=a\cdot b\cdot c=(80m)\cdot(50m)\cdot(10m)=40,000m^3.

2) The total number of bass is given by the product:

N=r\cdot V=(11bass)/(1,000m^3)\cdot40,000m^3=440bass.

Answer

The estimated bass population in the pond is 440 bass.
