Alex bought a new aquarium. He is in the process of setting it up. The aquarium is in the shape of a right rectangular prism and the dimensions, in inches, are 36 7 /8 × 19 × 24 5/ 8 . During the set-up, Alex fills the aquarium with 6 , 039 in3 of water. Part A What percent of the volume of the aquarium is filled with water? Round your answer to the nearest whole percent.

First let's find the volume of the aquarium. Remember that to find the volume of a rectangular prism, we have to multiply all 3 dimensions, then:

\begin{gathered} V=(36(7)/(8))(19)(24(5)/(8))=(36.875)(19)(24.625)=17252.89 \\ V=17,252.89in^3 \end{gathered}

Now that we know that the total volume of the aquarium is 17,252.89 in^3, we can find the percent of the volume filled with water using a rule of three:

\begin{gathered} 17,252.89\rightarrow100\text{ \%} \\ 6039\rightarrow x\text{ \%} \\ \Rightarrow x=(6039\cdot100)/(17252.89)=(603900)/(17252.89)=35 \\ x=35\text{ \%} \end{gathered}

therefore, Alex only filled the aquarium 35% of its capacity.
