QUESTION

Re-write each expression as a single fraction

a)(3)/(8)-(1)/(6)\text{ b) }(4)/(5)+(3)/(5)\text{ c)}(5)/(9)-(1)/(5)

ANSWER

To solve the (a) part

first we will find the LCM of 8 and 6

The LCM of 8 and 6 is 48

So we will now begin, We will divide 48 by 8 then multiply the result by 3, like wise we will divide 48 by 6 and then multiply the result by 1

That is;

(3)/(8)-\text{ }\frac{1}{6\text{ }}\text{ = }\frac{18\text{ - 8}}{48}=\text{ }(10)/(48)

We can reeduce the resulting fraction

(10)/(48)\text{ = }(5)/(24)

Solution to (b)

In the b) part, we don't need to find the LCM, because the denominators are the same, we will just go ahead and add

we will add the numerators and then just take one of the denominator

That is:

(4)/(5)+\text{ }(1)/(5)=(5)/(5)\text{ = }(1)/(1)

solution to c)

To solve c) we will follow the steps in a)

We will first find the LCM, then divide their LCM with the denominator and multiply the results with the numerators

That is :

(5)/(9)-(1)/(5)\text{ = }(25-9)/(45)\text{ = }(16)/(45)

we can't reduce the resulting fraction, so that's the final result.
