SOLUTION

We tackle this problem by relating scale factors (ratio of sides) to area factors (ratio of areas). We knw that;

Area\text{ }factor=(Scale\text{ }factor)^2

Thus, the area factor is;

A=((1)/(2))^2=(1)/(4)

This means that the newarea is one -ourth of the original area.

Thus, the answer is the new surface area is 1/4 of the original surface rea.
