Data:

Distance: 1/2 mile

Time: 8 and 1/2 minutes

The unit rate in miles per minute is the number of miles that George walked in a minute. Then, to find the rate in miles per minute:

1. The rate is the relation betwwen the distance and the time, and ollows the next formula:

r=(d)/(t)

Where r is the rate, d is the distance and t is the time.

Then we use that formula and the given values of d and t to find the rate:

r=\frac{(1)/(2)\text{miles}}{(8+(1)/(2))\min }

We can do first the add in the denominator:

8+(1)/(2)=(16+1)/(2)=(17)/(2)

Then we have that:

r=((1)/(2))/((17)/(2))
r=((1)/(17))(miles)/(\min)\approx0.06(miles)/(\min )The rate in miles per minute is: 1/17 miles/min or approx. 0.06miles/min
