If the ratio of tourists to locals is 3:8 and there are 90 tourists at the opening of a new museum, how many locals are in attendance?

To solve such problems we must know about Ratio.

A ratio shows us the number of times a number contains another number.

Note that the attendance of locals at the opening of the new museum is 90 and as given in the question the ratio is already given, therefore,


(3)/(8)=(Tourist)/(Locals)=(90)/(locals)

that is:


(3)/(8)=(90)/(locals)

by cross-multiplication, this is equivalent to:


3\text{ locals = (90)(8)}

that is:


\text{locals = }((90)(8))/(3)=240

So that, we can conclude that the correct answer is:

the attendance of locals at the opening of the new museum is 240.
