The formula for determining the area of a circle is expressed as

Area = pi x radius^2

We were told that each small circle has a radius of 5 cm.

pi = 3.14(this is a constant value)

Thus,

Area of each small circle = 3.14 x 5^2 = 78.5 cm^2

Looking at the big circle, the distance between two opposite ends is equal to 3 circles. This distance is also known as the diameter of the big circle. The diameter of the big circle would be the sum of the diameters of the smaller circles.

Diameter = radius x 2

Diameter of each small circle = 5 x 2 = 10

Since there are 3 small circles,

diameter of larger circle = 3 * 10 = 30 cm

Radius of larger circle = 30/2 = 15 cm

Area of larger circle = 3.14 x 15^2 = 706.5 cm^2

The region between two small circles is shaded.
