To begin with, let us understand some definition

Equivalent fractions: Equivalent fractions are two or more fractions that are all equal.

An example is given:

Improper Fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is equal to or greater than the denominator is called an improper fraction.

The image is given below

So we can now look at some examples involving the addition and subtraction of equivalent fractions

Addition:

(3)/(4)+(6)/(8)

To add this, we will first find the lowest common multiple of the denominator of the denominator

The denominators are 4 and 8

The multiples of 4 are: 4,8,12,16........ and so on

The multiples of 8 are: 8,16,24,32-------and so on

The lowest common denominator of 4 and 8 is 8

So the next step will be to divide each denominator by the lowest common denominator and then simplify as follow

(6+6)/(8)=(12)/(8)=(3)/(2)

Thus,

(3)/(4)+(6)/(8)=(3)/(2)
