The cell membrane is selectively permeable and it doesn't allow ions and organic molecules to pass, but non-polar molecules can diffuse across the membrane, which is called passive or simple diffusion. An example of this is the gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that occurs in the alveoli.
