Speed = (Distance/Time)

55 = (x/t)

For the 65 mph car

65 = (300 - x)/t

300 - x = 65t

We can substitute the value of x from equation 1 into the second equation

300 - x = 65t

300 - 55t = 65t

65t = 300 - 55t

65t + 55t = 300

120t = 300

Divide both sides by 120

(120t/120) = (300/120)
