\begin{gathered} x+y=4 \\ x-y=7 \end{gathered}

Let's add equation 1 with equation 2 to eliminate the variable y and then calculate the value for x

\begin{gathered} x+y+x-y=4+7 \\ 2x=11 \\ x=(11)/(2) \\ \end{gathered}

Now let's calculate the value for x

\begin{gathered} y=x-7 \\ y=(11)/(2)-7 \\ y=-(3)/(2) \end{gathered}

The solution would be x = 11/2 y y = -3/2
