Solution:

Given that;

In a rectangle, the ratio of the width to the length is 4:5,

Where l is the length and w is the width of the rectangle

w:l=4:5

If the rectangle is 40 centimeters long, i.e.

l=40\text{ cm}

The width, w, will be

\begin{gathered} w:40=4:5 \\ (w)/(40)=(4)/(5) \\ Crossmultiply \\ 5w=40*4 \\ Divide\text{ both sides by 5} \\ (5w)/(5)=(160)/(5) \\ w=32\text{ cm} \end{gathered}

Hence, the width is 32 cm (option A)
