The equation for the magnitude of earthquake as function of intensity I and reference intensity I_0 is,

M=\log ((I)/(I_0))

Earthequake intensity is 10,000 times the refernce earthquake. So,

I=10,000I_0

Substitute the values in the equation to obtain equation for measure of eqathquake intensity.

\begin{gathered} M=\log ((10,000I_0)/(I_0)) \\ =\log (10,000) \end{gathered}
