On the rectangle shown below, the ratio of base to height is 12:5.If you created a new rectangle by doubling the length of the base and tripling the height, would the newrectangle be proportional to the original? Show your thinking mathematically

To solve this problem let's draw a picture.

We must compare ratios between the two rectangles. Like this.

For the first rectangle we may write:

12 / 5

For the second one we get:

24 / 15

But we can simplify that. Divide numerator and denominator by 3. We have:

24 / 15 = 8 / 5

Comparing both fractions:

12 / 5 ≠ 8 / 5

Answer: The new rectangle won't be proportional to the original.
