A rectangular poster measures 42 inches by 26 inches. A craft shop fitted the poster with a one-inch wide metal frame. What's the area of the metal frame/border only? (not including the inside space for the poster!)

The poster and the frame can be seen in the figure below:

To solve this question, follow the steps below.

Step 01: Find the area of the poster.

The area of a rectangle is A = ab, where a and b are the measure of the sides.

The area of the poster:

\begin{gathered} Ap=42\cdot26 \\ Ap=1092in^2 \end{gathered}

Step 02: Find the area total (At).

The area total (At) is the area of the poster + the area of the frame.

To find it, use:

a = 42 + 1 + 1 =44 in

b = 26 + 1 + 1 =28 in

\begin{gathered} At=44\cdot28 \\ At=1232in^2 \end{gathered}

Step 03: Find the area of the border (Ab).

The area of the border is Ab = At - Ap.

\begin{gathered} Ab=1232-1092 \\ Ab=140in^2 \end{gathered}

The area of the border is 140 in².
