SOLUTION

Let the number of people who live in the Lake Section = x

Let the number of people who live in the Hill Section = 295 + x ,

Total = 3496

The equation is x + ( 295 + x ) = 3496

x + x + 295 = 3496

2 x + 295 = 3496

2x = 3496 - 295

2 x = 3201

Divide both sides by 2 , we have :

x = 3201 / 2

x = 1600 .5

x = 1601 ( nearest whole number)

The number of people who live in the Lake Section = x = 1601

The number of people who live in the Hill Section = 295 + x = 295 + 1601 = 1896
