Solution

Matt Byme"s Gym

(a) The matt byme gym charge per month (slope)

pick any two-point on the cost of membership, as the y-axis and the same two points on the number of months as the x-axis.

m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)=(40-35)/(3-2)=(5)/(1)=5

Therefore the matt byme gym charge per month = $5

(b) The charge of matt by me gym to join the gym (y-intercept)

\begin{gathered} y-y_1=m(x-x_1) \\ at\text{ points (3,40)} \\ y_1=40,x_1=3 \\ y-40=5(x-3) \\ y-40=5x-15 \\ y=5x-15+40 \\ y=5x+25 \\ y=mx+c \\ \text{where c = y-intercept = 25} \end{gathered}

Hence the y-intercept to join the gym = 25
