\begin{gathered} y=x+5 \\ y=-2x-1 \end{gathered}

we can replace the y of the first equation on the second and solve x


\begin{gathered} x+5=-2x-1 \\ x+2x=-1-5 \\ 3x=-6 \\ x=-(6)/(3) \\ x=-2 \end{gathered}

now replace the x on any equation yo find y( i will use the first eq)


\begin{gathered} y=(-2)+5 \\ y=3 \end{gathered}

so, the solution is (-2,3), this happens because the two lines meet at this point
